Newark Police have seen a rise in incidents recently involving counterfeit bank notes.
We have had particular incidents reported at takeaways and among residents selling items on Facebook Marketplace.
Please take a moment to check any notes you receive when buying or selling items—especially higher‑value notes.
If you are selling items – always take a minute to check any cash handed to you – look for the following:
- Check the watermark and hologram
- Feel for raised print on the note
- Tilt the note to see colour‑changing featuresUse a light source to verify the security thread
If you suspect counterfeit cash or something feels right – don’t accept it and report online or 101.
Businesses – be mindful!
Detector pens that were previously recommended to detect fake notes now don’t flag up counterfeit notes printed on polymer.
If you suspect a note you have is counterfeit, please hand this in to your local Police Station or Bank.
